Paranormal Romance

ARC Review: Resting Witch Face – Juliette Cross (Stay a Spell #5)

Twelve years ago, Jules Savoie ended her relationship with the vampire overlord of New Orleans, Ruben Dubois. For good reasons. A woman in power must often make sacrifices to protect others. She knows the truth of it down to her aching heart.

When Ruben watches his best friend Devraj get married, a stinging realization hits him hard…he’s done waiting. They say time heals all wounds. In this case, it merely sharpened the pain and made one fact crystal clear. Jules Savoie is his soulmate, and nothing would keep him from her. Not anymore.

Forced to work side by side to fight for the werewolf cause, they campaign together at covens from New Orleans to London. The reignited spark burns hotter than ever before. But when a power-hungry vampire sets his predatory sights on Jules, will their love be strong enough against black magic? Or will he lose her again? And this time, maybe…for good.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Jules and Ruben. Jules and Ruben. Jules and Ruben.
I’m not even sure what else I can say except #RULES was everything that I wanted for them and more.

Since the very beginning of the Stay A Spell series, the sexual tension between these two ex-lovers has been high, and I have desperately wanted to know what on earth happened between Ruben and Juliana to cause their break-up. I should first point out that, personally, I am not a huge fan of second chance romance. I don’t hate it but I don’t typically gravitate towards the trope either because I find the reason for their break-up to be meh-worthy or a valid reason to never get back together.

However, as a huge fan of Juliette Cross’s work, I trusted JC 100 per cent with this trope and knew it was going to be so, so good. And it was!

I absolutely loved everything about this story, from getting a more in-depth look at Jules, Ruben and how they perfectly match one another, to finding out the reason for their previous break-up twelve years ago and witnessing how much both MCs have grown in that time. Also, I need to talk about the PINE! I love a pining MMC and Resting Witch Face delivers! Yes, Jules does some pining too, but Ruben + pining = chef’s kiss.

As for the rest of the storyline, I won’t give too much away, but I loved seeing pieces of the magical world outside of New Orleans and how each coven works as a society. There are so many unique factors, elements and personalities within this world that I feel are so understated and JC doesn’t get nearly enough appreciation for her world-building.

Overall, a wonderfully worth-the-wait story that I could easily re-read again and again. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I adore this book. I adore this series. And I adore JC!

I highly recommend Resting Witch Face (and the Stay a Spell series) to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance, second chance romance, “spooky season” reads, or wants to explore magical New Orleans.

Now I need to go mentally prepare myself for the utter delight that will be Grim and Bear It (Henry and Clara’s book).
